Brinkmann Vertical Gas Smoker – Truck Mod Central

I’ve been looking around for some sort of inexpensive gas smoker for a while. I thought about getting the same one Jose bought a while back. but, after the problems he had with his Master Forge Double-Door Propane smoker, I figured I’d at least try a different brand..

I haven’t used the Master Forge smoker or even laid-eyes on it. but, from what I have read, the Master Forge and the Brinkmann Vertical Propane Smoker I bought are roughly equivalent to one another on features, etc..

Here’s what mine looks like :

Here’s a picture of some chicken cooking :

…and the results…

This was my first smoker to put together. If I had done another one before, I probably would’ve noticed a step that had an incomplete diagram, which mentioned mounting the burner, but didn’t show mounting the burner.. it was an easy enough back-track and fix, once I realized “hey, where’s this fWONkin’ piece go??”

The overall quality seems “ok” for the $150 sale price.. could the metal be thicker? sure. could it seal up tighter? Definitely. but, for $150, it should last me the 2 or 3 yrs I’d like to get out of it, until I can hopefully figure out what I want to do with a section of the backyard for a possible grilling/smoking/cooking area..

I cut up a chicken earlier (my first time doing that) and smoked the pieces.. I put the bigger pieces on the grate closest to the heat and the smaller pieces farther away. I was hoping they would all be done at around around the same time. Unfortunately, I ended-up overcooking the breasts, but everything else turned out great. all of it had a nice, smokey flavor, without being too smokey..

I think my next experiment will be to leave a chicken whole (which is what I probably should’ve done this time) and smoke it at a slower, lower temperature..

Was it money well spent? Yeah, I think so.. I’ll get some use out of it, that’s for sure.. I’ve tried some different smoke boxes with my Weber propane grill and I just haven’t been able to get the ‘slow & low’ thing going for creating smoke at a lower temperature and cooking the meat more slowly.. So, yeah, I think this will get me to where I want to be with smoking.. and it’ll be easier to work with when the wood chips burn up! (Trying to move a hot grill grate while the grill is on isn’t an ideal way to add wood chips to a long cooking process. )

Beaches, Fish Win Big As Turkey Bans Smoking : TreeHugger

Last year, the Anatolia news agency reported that cigarette butts and packaging accounted for 73.8 percent of the 5,321 kilograms of waste collected by volunteers with the Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association (TURMEPA) at 24 coastal areas throughout the country.

Only the second developing nation, after Uruguay, to implement a comprehensive ban on smoking, Turkey will now charge a fine of 25 Turkish Liras for throwing cigarette butts or related waste on the ground. (Smoking itself incurs a fine of 68 liras.)

Butts on the beachIn the United States, where smoking is much less socially accepted than in Turkey, “smoking-related activities” — including cigarette butts and filters, cigar tips, tobacco packaging and wrappers, and cigarette lighters — create 34.9 percent of the marine debris, the Ocean Conservancy reported in its 2005 national summary for the International Coastal Cleanup. Cigarettes are the top type of garbage gathered in the cleanups, with 1,008,288 collected in 2005.

Worldwide, an estimated 30 percent of the 4.3 trillion cigarette butts disposed of annually end up as litter, creating more than 500,000 tons of pollution each year. Cigarette filters, made of the synthetic polymer cellulose acetate, never degrade, but quickly start leaching cadmium, lead, arsenic and other chemicals into marine ecosystems — and can end up in the stomachs of birds, fish, and other animals.

Deadly debrisNicotine itself “has been shown to be lethal to species of fish, crustaceans, zooplankton, and other aquatic organisms, as well as being a known insecticide,” according to the environmental group Californians Against Waste, which also notes the costs incurred by municipal governments to clean up cigarette-related litter.

“On top of the costs of litter abatement, fires caused by discarded cigarettes result in billions of damages, as well as the destruction of human life, wildlife, and entire ecosystems,” Californians Against Waste concludes. “It is hard to imagine a more menacing litter culprit than the cigarette butt.” All the more reason, ban proponents say, to stamp them out — for good.

8 Easy Steps on How to Cook Fish on a Gas Grill

Author: Category: Articles Tags: debris, grate, grill grates, hand mitts, Step, time

Aside from meat, you can grill fish in a fast and easy way by using a gas grill. Grilling fish can literally be grilled in a matter of minutes, making it the perfect meal after work or for an impromptu get together. It’s also great for dinner parties especially when you never know how many guests will arrive. maybe the only hardest part of grilling a fish is to know when it is done. the secret is to let the grill and time do the work. here are steps on how to cook fish on a gas grill.

Step 1: Clean your grate.

Make sure your grate is clean. Remove debris to avoid the fish to stick on the grate. a clean grate will give your fish a delectable flavor as well. use a barbecue hand mitts and scrub the grill grate using a grill brush to further remove any particle or debris. to make the grill grates glossy and non-stick, dip about two folded paper towels in olive oil, use a tong to grasp it and rub the grill grates. Repeat the process of rubbing the grate with oil to approximately five more times, making sure that your fish won’t stick to the grate.

Step 2: Get an aluminum foil and cover it to the gas grill.

Set the fire to high heat and wait for about 10 to 15 minutes to thoroughly burn off the debris. when this process is done, remove the foil.

Step 3: Clean the fish.

Squeeze the excess moisture with a paper towel or kitchen towel. It is important to remove the excess moisture because it will cause your fish to steam instead of sear. Put it inside the fridge until you are ready to grill it.

Step 4: Grill the fish.

When it is time to grill, brush each side of the fish with olive oil or season it with salt. to add more flavor and keep the fish moist, you can brush it with melted butter or some fresh lemon juice while you are grilling. Remember to check your fish from time to time because using butter can burn the fish easily, so be careful. Using lemon juice over the fish can add to the show through the steam and the sizzle created by it, plus the appetizing smell that could make everyone hungry and appreciate the meal.

Step 5: Arrange the fish diagonally on the grate, with skin side down across the grate to create that famous grill marks.

For thinner and flakier fish, use a grill basket or wrap it with aluminum foil with olive oil, wine or lemon juice. This is to avoid the fish from falling apart and to keep the moisture during cooking and flipping.

Step 6: Adjust the temperature of the grill down to low.

This is to prevent it from cooking too fast. Close the lid while cooking. Cooking will approximately take about 10 minutes for every inch of thickness of the fish. It is advisable to check your fish from time to time.

Step 7: Check if the skin of the fish has become seared and crisp.

Lift the edge of the fish using a turner, spatula or tong to see if it easily moves from the grates. do not move the fish when you see it is not yet done for it could easily break up. If the skin is already seared, flip your fish over.

Step 8: Remove it from the grill.

When both sides are seared and fish flakes easily when a fork is inserted, then it is done. Remove the fish from the grill and you can now serve it to your hungry guests!

Grilling fish is one of the best ways to cook fish. Fish grilling will generally take a few minutes of your time, making it the best and easy to prepare grilled meal for your visitor. Using gas grills make the entire process even easier than expected.
